Thomas Allen (baritone) was born in Seaham Harbour and studied singing and organ at the Royal College of music. He has performed
with La Scala in Milan, the State Operas of Vienna and Munich, Salzburg Festival, Metropolitan Opera in New York, Lyric Opera of
Chicago and San Francisco Opera. With Royal Opera Covent Garden, he has toured America with Die Zauberflöte, and Japan with
Don Giovanni and Le Nozze Di Figaro. He was awarded a knighthood in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Sheila Armstrong (soprano) was born in Ashington, Northumberland. After studying in Newcastle and the Royal Academy of Music,
she won the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Award and the Mozart Prize in the same year. She has sang with Sadler’s Wells, Glyndebourne
Festival, and Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as major festivals and tours throughout Europe, the Far East, the United States
and Canada. She retired from professional performance in 1993.

Eric Boswell was originally from Wearside, but lived the later part of his life in rural Northumbria. Perhaps his greatest commercial success was the Christmas children’s song Little Donkey, which has been recorded by many stars, including Gracie Fields, Nina & Frederick, and the Beverley Sisters.

Owen Brannigan (bass) was born at Annitsford in Northumberland in 1908. He was originally a carpenter by trade, but studied singing at the
Guildhall School of Music in London. He was a regular at Glyndebourne and Covent Garden, and recorded many Gilbert & Sullivan songs as
well as favourites from his native North East. He died in 1973.

C Ernest Catcheside-Warrington was an important contributor to the North East song tradition in the first half of the 20th
Century, both as a performer and a recording artist. He is probably best known for compiling anthologies of Tyneside songs.

Suzannah Clarke (soprano) trained in Italy with Arrigo Pola, Pavarotti’s singing coach. She speaks Italian fluently and
has won international competitions in Spoleto, Modena and Barcelona. She has performed at Opera Festivals in Batignano, Barbados and
Wexford and sung leading rôles in many operas including The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute and Carmen. She has
appeared as Principal Soprano with English National Opera and at La Scala, Milan.

David Clelland was born in Gateshead and worked as an electrical tester for Reyrolle. He became the MP for Tyne Bridge in 1985.

Terry Conway was born in Hexham General Hospital, and, apart from a short sojourn in Southport when very young, has lived in
Northumberland ever since. He worked for Northumberland County Council for many years, but has now ‘retired’ as a self-employed
gardener/handyman. Fortunately, he also finds time to write, perform and record songs. He’s an authority on Border Ballads.

Graeme Danby was born in 1962 at Consett. He started singing at the age of six and his love of song took him to local music festivals, Newcastle Cathedral Choir and on to study at The Royal Academy of Music in London.
Graeme’s rich and powerful basso profundo has been heard all over Europe, including the prestigious La Scala Theatre in Milan. In Britain, he’s performed with English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North, Glyndebourne and The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Johnny Dickinson has been described as the most potent slide guitar player in the UK.
His 2004 contribution to the Anthology is a fine set of musical interpretations of a selection of poetry written or collected by
Algernon Charles Swinburne.
Johnny's music perfectly complements the lyrics of the 19th Century poet in the acclaimed album Border Ballads.

Judy Dinning is a singer/songwriter who was born and brought up in Hexhamshire and still lives near Hexham. She’s a classically
trained singer, with a Diploma in Voice from the London College of Music, but her first love is for traditional music. She plays guitar,
keyboards, Appalachian dulcimer, bodhran and percussion.

Mike Elliott used to compère the folk club at the now demolished George and Dragon pub in Sunderland. He formed Northern Front with
Ed Pickford and Nick Fenwick, and ran the Londonderry Nickelodeon. He’s worked as a singer, comedian, after dinner speaker
and radio shock jock. He appeared in the box office success Billy Elliott.
